Materials and Timber Choices

Choosing the right timber is one of the most important decisions in any joinery project. Different species offer different characteristics in terms of appearance, stability, durability and maintenance.

For external joinery such as windows and doors, timber selection is guided by exposure and long-term performance. Stable modified timbers such as Accoya are often specified where durability and reduced movement are priorities, while hardwoods like oak or sapele may be used where appearance or conservation requirements dictate.

Internal joinery allows for a wider range of materials, with choices often driven by appearance, budget and the surrounding interior. Solid timber, veneered boards or a combination of both can be used depending on the application.

No timber is completely maintenance-free, and understanding how a material will behave over time helps ensure the right choice is made for each project. Advice can be given where required to help balance performance, appearance and longevity.
